Attraction: Diamond Polishers
Amsterdam has been famous for diamonds for over 400 years. In 1585, during the Eighty years war against Spain, Antwerp was captured by
the Spanish. Until then, Antwerp had been the centre of the diamond trade, but when the traders fled north to Amsterdam, it became the new centre for the diamond trade and industry. Some of the most famous diamonds in the world have been cut and polished in Amsterdam. The Cullinan Diamond, the biggest ever found, and the Koh-I-Noor were processed in Amsterdam.
Attraction: Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum houses a collection that has justifiably attained world renown. It contains the
largest art collection in the Netherlands. The painting section represents the most important collection of Dutch paintings from 15th up to including the 19th century, which includes the works of Rembrandt (22 paintings, including the "Night Watch") Vermeer, Frans Hals, Albert Cuyp and Jan Steen. The print room contains approximately one million prints and drawings.
